North Otago is dry and irrigation is the key to farming sustainably here. Sustainable farming underpins the economy of the region and the vitality of its communities.
The company utilises water from the Waitaki River and directs it through the scheme’s physical infrastructure for delivery, at pressure, to the farm boundary of each shareholder.
The scheme is modern, using advanced pumping and flow-control technology. Water is piped across the network and applied on farm through a variety of spray systems, ensuring highly efficient use, from river to pasture.
It all comes down to people. The scheme is governed by a Board of Directors comprising four elected farmer shareholders, two appointed independent directors and a Waitaki District Council representative. A busy team of professionals handles the day-to-day management of the business from the company’s Oamaru office, while the field-based operations team is responsible for the physical operation and maintenance of the scheme.
