Irrigation Scheme Operator

The North Otago Irrigation Company Limited (NOIC) distributes water from the Waitaki River to 170 farms across the Downlands of North Otago. Our focus is to maintain a complex irrigation scheme, ensuring reliability of supply. Excellent customer service, social responsibility and environmental leadership are hallmarks of our culture. 

Primary responsibilities: Responsible for the safe and efficient running of this $170M scheme, the Operations Team is looking for an Operator who is technically competent, able to alone at times and who is seeking a varied and stimulating role. 

The role includes H+S, JSA and risk assessments, mechanical repairs, water meter adjustments and flow calibrations, hydrometer maintenance, screen and pump-house servicing and cleaning, contractor supervision, customer and shareholder interface, resolution of customer technical complaints and problems, compliance with service targets, data collection and finding opportunities for continuous improvement. Operators are required to be on-call on a rostered basis.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential

  • Class 1 driver’s licence.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn how to operate computerised plant and equipment.
  • Good communication skills and work well in a team.
  • Eager to learn and a can-do attitude.
  • Physically fit. 

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Experience in infrastructure assets and H+S.
  • Mechanical experience.
  • Experience operating industrial control equipment.
  • Experience with pilot driven flow and pressure control equipment.
